Firefighters = Fire – especially when there's no power!

Cool close up of burning pine cones
Click on this image to see the full size one, it's SO cool looking!

OK, so I am married to a Firefighter – did you know that most Firefighters choose that profession because they are Pyromaniacs!!

We still have no power; apparently as of this morning, 50% of Palm Beach County has their power back, and in fact 70% of OUR neighbourhood has it back too (Sat night). All but the last 3 streets – Guess where we live – on the last street!!!

But we have been making the most of it. Nils dug a pit in the back yard and we have been having Marshmellow toasting parties and burning the mangled swing and the umpteen pine cones as fuel.  The pine cones look AWESOME when they burn!!  (Technically any 'open fires' are illegal in Palm Bch Co, but hopefully if the fire trucks show up Nils would get 'grace' !!

So today my kids are back in school (much to their dismay!) well Melanie is still on her way back from NC with the other family (I hope!) and I am at my MIL's (who has had power since Friday) with the dogs as Nils is on duty today.

I am going to make a page of more of the Fire photos (cos they look SO cool!!) so remember to check the “What's New” page often – oh and the POTW for today is up too – The dogs are enjoying the night-time bonfires too and being outside so much in such cool weather – the photo(s) I used for today is not necessarily a good portrait of THEM but of their terrier characters!!!

Thank goodness it's still cool (low 70's) outside!

I'm Exhausted – we've (as in Nils, Matt and I) been working in the yard all day – cleaning and dragging branches to the front pile, raking up MILLIONS of pine cones and pine needles and debris!! It's not done yet either!!

This photo would have been a GREAT idea to do our 2005 Christmas family photo under – oh YEAH we DID that last year!!! It is a different tree BTW !!

Still no power, but getting gas is not such an issue anymore as more places open up and get power.  They are saying that if you don't have your power by Sunday night that it will be a while as it means you are on a grid that needs major repair to get it back online!!

I am off to a friends now to clean up (first hot shower in 5 days) and go to church with her, her 2 girls and my 2 youngest girls – yes they have power at church and the pastor's (who is still in bed with head injury but not critical anymore) wife will be speaking.

Nils is HOME, still no power!

5pm image
Scary photo of me that Matt took (surprised me) of me with my 'sperlunken' on my head (reading a book) last night!

But guess what, Nils got gas this morning.  – OH yeah he is HOME!! Got here around 5pm last night.

He had to drive up to Jupiter to get gas this morning at a place where he only had to wait for 15 mins or so instead of 2-3 HOURS down by us.  Thankfully his truck is diesel, which is NOT such an issue to fill up since so few people have diesel vehicles or want it (since generators need gas too not diesel)

So we have gas for our generator and his Mum's.  Today we will start on the major back yard clean-up – we left it as is since I wanted Nils to see it with his own eyes, plus have him help us do it!! If we still have no power later today, we will travel to a friends house (who got it back last night) for hot showers, clean up and stuff.

Much happier today, my man is home and from reading his journal while he was gone, *I* don't need to say a WORD to him about his not being here –

quote As I make this last entry to this trip journal, I must say that what I thought was going to be the BEST surf trip I ever took has now become the WORST trip I will probably have ever taken. I should have never left, but I was selfish and I guess the only good thing I can take from this trip is that I will NEVER leave my family in a situation as I have done this time. It was not worth the HEARTACHE by any means”

There is more but that is the most important part of it!!”

Tootles for now….

I need to keep my mouth shut!! Everytime I say, well I am not going to say it again, but I get plunged back into non-communication again…

Still no power, running out of gas for generator, not heard from Nils, he is supposed to come home today but that Tropical Depression Beta was sitting of the coast of Nicaragua last night.

The news guys says “Don't worry this one won't be affecting any of us in the Florida region, it's probably just going to go into Nicaragua” – ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHH but it IS going to affect *us*, cos my hubby is IN Nicaragua, in fact at the airport trying to get back to Florida !!!

Matt, Joanie and the 2 little girls went to the South Florida Fairgrounds today to get ice, water and 8 MRE's (packed meals) I had NO desire to go (since we HAVE food, and HAVE water) but then I was not going to make a big deal about it. They waited for an hour and were home a lot quicker than I thought they would be !

Melanie left last night (11pm) with a family to go up to NC, I was sad to see her go, but really the right thing to do! The kids school will def not be in session until at least Monday and it sustained quite a bit of damage – the church there has a big hole in the roof, one of the buildings lost the roof in 2 spots. The new big building is fine but of course no power.

I am now going to try and get the photos done and uploaded before we lose connection or the generator runs quits and no more router!!

Finally got DSL/phone back!

OK, so I post to you all at 6pm on Monday night, send it out to all my email lists, post it to the blog and then WHAM – we lost the phone and DSL!!  Plunged back into incommunicado!! Cell phone sporadic too – never ring, can occasionally get messages!

It is now 48hrs later and we JUST got the phone/DSL back (still no power of course) so I just downloaded 415 – yes 415 email messages!!! will read them all in a bit, just want to do an update as fast as I can in case it goes out again (plus we are running lower on gas to fuel the generator and the lines at the VERY few stations that are able to pump gas on generator power are INSANE. The one at the edge of our neigbourhood actually is open and the line is ALL the way down to our street  (over a mile) and there is a $20 max per car too.

I actually did do this weeks POTW on Monday night, but when I went to upload it to our web site was when I discovered the DSL was gone!!! (I just uploaded it now)

I started working on the photos Monday too, but am not done yet – will probably work on them tonight.

Nils is due back tomorrow (have to drive down to Ft Lauderdale to get him, which will pretty much deplete the gas in his truck, that should be interesting getting gas, well he is diesel) to top it all off, Nils got his wallet stolen in Nicaragua, ALL of his money ($500) and 2 credit cards – Sigh.  I did cancel the 2 cards (no charges on them, but then again who would need the cards when there was $500 right there with them!!!!)  No comment from me as to why he put ALL his money IN his wallet in an UNLOCKED room.

Well gonna post this and then read my emails, the kids want to check their “Myspace” too, and Mel is leaving tonight with a family here to go to their NC house as there will def be no school till next Monday at the earliest.

Tootles, will post again later tonight if I can.

We're alive and well!!!

83 emails were waiting for me (I read all of the ALICE?? And WILMA!!! ones)

Thanks for all your concern and wishes and for those of you that have rung already (land line is still working) Cell phone is sketchy, signal goes in and out.

Can I just say I LOVE that the DSL is still working AND that we have a generator!!!

Thanks to my 16yr old son and our neighbour Howard, we now have the fridge, 2 freezers, a tv, playstation (the direct TV dish got ripped off the house so no tv!!) the modem and wireless router all plugged in (my laptop is wireless and on battery right now)

The weather is gorgeous now!! In the mid 60's, down to a slight breeze, clear, crisp and cool (which is good since we are without power and will be for who knows how long!!)

Can I just say – HOLY CRAP – that was WAY worse that Frances and Jeanne were last year!!!

We kept hearing (before the power went out at 8am today) it would be a strong cat1, weak cat2 when it got to us and that the front side would be worse, and that after the eye, the back side would be weaker – Bunch of Codswallop!!

The backside (har har) was AWFUL and WAY worse – We (that would be Mel, Matt, Matt's friend Justin and I) watched it out of the back door (only thing NOT covered in shutters – glass panes you can see out of) it was INSANE.

The time frame was 8am-10am for the front side (lost power are 8:15am), 10am-11am for the eye, and 11am-1pm for the backside, 1pm-2:30pm for the ending/slowing down part…so thankfully it was a fast one.

We watched the neighbours shed disintegrate and blow away, all the trees are cracked, broken, uprooted, the chain link fence is smashed in about 5 places (from trees landing on them)

Someone's porch/patio (west of us) ripped off their house and came crashing down the street, taking out cars (including Nils' truck which is all dented and scratched up!) front porches, lampposts – mangled metal and aluminum all over the street.

The 2 little girls were (and still are) at my MIL's – she came to get them on Sunday afternoon as she did not really want to be alone, did not want to leave her house (good job she didn't – more on that in a bit) and didn't want to come here. The girls wanted to be there with her, so I said OK, fine, don't call me in the middle of it saying “I'm scared, come get me” !!

So anyway during the backside of the storm Joanie, Maddie and Kenzie had to ALL lean against her big sliding glass door onto her patio (facing west, where the wind was coming from) for an HOUR to prevent it from buckling so much it came off the tracks and blew into the house – EEEK – sounded scary to me, I asked her if the girls were scared? Nope she said, they HATE the Hurricane and wanted it to stop, but they weren't scared.

I must admit it is MUCH better being able to SEE what you are hearing, as scary and as unbelievable as it is, that the wind is so strong and can do so much damage. Hearing stuff and not know what is going on is WAY worse.

Both the dogs were fine and were glad to go out in the eye for a piddle and poop !!! I took an adorable photo of them (it will be the next POTW) looking out the back window at the storm !!

So now we are here at the house – Mel is sleeping on the sofa, Matt is playing on the playstation, I am on my laptop (surprise surprise!) and the dogs are both napping in their crates (how cute, if I didn't think they would wake up and move, I would take a photo of them – oh good Matt managed to !!)

I should upload the photos and post them!! I will do that next, once I send this out to everyone!

Been on the phone a LOT too – my Mum from England, Joanie, Nils from Nicaragua (2 of them are coming home early, but the earliest they can fly back is Wednesday morning AND the waves down there are crappy anyway due to the storm!!) and various friends (local) and internet friends too – THANKS so much to all of you for caring, worrying, praying and calling!!

Nope, I'm still not moving from Florida!!

Photos to follow!!

Alice
